The dictionary peaks at nine letters, but play peaks much shorter: in Scrabble the average play is four to five letters, Wordle is always five, and Jumble answers run four to six. The lists above cover the lengths you actually need; for longer words use the pattern finder.

Why do the lists show common words only?

The full dictionary has 270,000 words, most of them inflections and rare terms. The common lists are the words whose base form appears in a general English dictionary, which keeps each page quick to load and useful to read. The unscrambler searches the full list.

What is the most common word length in English?

In a dictionary, nine letters (about 41,000 words here). In running text, the average English word is about 4.7 letters, because short function words like the, of and and repeat so often.
